On this day I take a stand still to wish my country a happy democracy day and a successful transition.
Arise oh compatriot, Nigeria’s call obey
To serve our father land
In love and strength and faith
The Labour of our heroes past shall never be in vain
To serve with and might
One nation bound in freedom, peace and unity.

Nigeria, my Nigeria,
one nation blacklisted by all nations of the world but still opens her hands to all nations of the world.
One nation that her downfall would be the ultimate joy of many nations of the world but she keeps waxing stronger.
One nation that is the pride of Africa yet derided by Africans yet still remains it’s hope.
One nation that has gone through so much but in the end stuck together.
One nation that the world powers will call poor but yet is citizens are happier than theirs.
One nation that was taught how to handle to gun but not how to grow her economy but has learnt to try no matter how many times she fails.
One nation that the only news BBC and CNN know how to report of it is news of doom and evil but yet rides on her woes and grows stronger.
One nation that the strengths of her citizens are never highlighted but their weaknesses are magnified and still yet they always stand out wherever they are.
One nation with some many languages and tribes in only 36 States and 1 FCT and yet no division but unity in her diversity.
One nation that her citizens have been made to believe foreigners lies but still leave the truth of the land that we are a great people.
One nation that is the most fashionable country in the world, the largest market for technologies how then can we be poor when we make the world economy.
One nation that the so called wealthy nations steal from but won’t give to her.
Nigeria, my Nigeria, my pride of Today and hope of tomorrow and the future of the world.

Oh God of creation, direct our noble cause
Guide our leaders right, help our youth the truth to know
In love and honesty to grow
And live in just and truth
Great lofty height attain
To build a nation where peace and justice shall reign.

Morale: Things we do that kills people’s morale cont’d

The reason we have chairs in the stadium is so that people come around to cheer the players as they watch on. Every athletes strength  comes from the fact that they have fans who believe in them and are cheering them and their morale is built.

image

4. Ignoring people’s feeling: everyone want to be loved even the person you think is incapable of loving. Everyone wants someone who gives them special attention and knows their want and needs and how to attend to them and when that does not happen you find some withdrawing into their cocoon and some take out the frustration using different means. You have a friend or a love and you are insensitive to their feelings or behave like it doesn’t matter and cause many of the troubles we have in the world today because they felt abandoned by their friends. Show them you care even about the minute details because it might just be important. It’s when you see this friend that you are all over that person but when out of site then it’s out of mind for you. Help them to be better person, encourage them. Sometimes it’s just your voice that needs to be heard to tell them they can push through while sometime your financial support will do the magic. What has kept me writing since I started this blog is not the passion for writing but the encouragement of friends and my fiance who are constantly reading and commenting. Their love is my strength, their support is my tenacity. Encourage your friends today, don’t kill the morale.

5. Insult: my oh my! Some people’s tongue are sharper than two edge sword. They cut and tear, they wound and open sores. Their mouth is filled with venom. They don’t even know how to greet without insulting. I was in a bus the other day when another bus who didn’t have a side mirror and was trying to leave one lane to another almost crashed into our bus. The first thing a woman in the bus would say was, “you will never prosper” in yoruba language. I was in the front sit and it was my side he was about to hit but I didn’t say anything because I knew it wasn’t intentional and he quickly apologized. Venom is some people’s breakfast which they give lebraly. And such cause fight especially if you don’t know what that person has been going through. When I see women insult their husbands I am so shocked and I wonder if these women know they are insulting themselves and causing themselves pain. No matter what a person does, the Bible says “soft answer turned away wrath while harsh words stir up strife”. The day I decided not to to use words such as stupid, idiot, and the likes on people they disappeared from my dictionary. They sound alien to my ears anyway. Make a decision today to bless and not curse. Especially your loved ones.

6. Abusive of their qualities: this is a tendency that humans are prone to, abusing the qualities of others. We take for granted a person’s gentleness, quietness, selflessness, patience, generosity thinking we are smart. We respect those who intimidate and manipulate us. We tremble for proud and obstinate persons. Never take for granted those people who pour out their life for you because a time will come when they will feel struck on the face and change and became hardened and tough. All done in response to build their morale which you have tried to kill.

7. Lack of encouragement: everyone likes a sense of fulfillment. There are times  a person is doing well and they only feel better if acknowledge by a loved one and there are times that are tough and encouragement from inside will keep them going but when it seems they can’t find your support by your lack of words or kind words or your seemingly indifferent attitude it can destroy their morale, their urge to push through. Never be stingy with kind words, words that strengthen. Criticism is something people do without being invited and for people’s heart to survive criticism they become philosophers but the truth is don’t be always quick to criticize but encourage and share your ideas that can help the person do better. Where you need to rebuke, do it in love. A successful person needs a morale and to have that needs your encouragement. Never kill a morale.

Let me tell you a story. When I was in Primary school I didn’t like mathematics at all, I passed all my subjects but the best I had in maths was 49% and that was a good day. The day I finished from primary school I was one of the best pupils but without maths. When we got home from the graduation ceremony my neighbor pick up my report sheet and she said, “Noka you did well but why did you fail maths?” I boldly answered, “I hate maths”. At that point my mum came in and she scolded me saying my father loves maths, she loves maths so where did I get my hatred of maths from, that she never wanted to hear such nonsense again. She said “as you are going to secondary school if I ever hear that you fail maths you will be in trouble”. You can be sure that I never took her threats for granted. When I got to JSS1 I told myself that I must love maths, I must know maths and I put my whole effort in mathematics. At the end of first term I came 38th position out of 196 students in my set but I was satisfied because I wanted to please my mum. Then at the end of second term I came 3rd position and I was so excited. I showed my mum my result she didn’t say a thing so I assumed she didn’t see it. So one day while pounding yam outside I said to her with so much enthusiasm, “mum, I came 3rd in maths in my whole set this term”. You know what she said, where were you when someone came first? No need to tell you I was crushed. I thought she would say you that hated and failed maths in a class of 38, you tried, keep it up but you can do better. After that day I never attempted even coming 3rd again. I did whatever I could do and whatever I got was it. Where people were competing in class I wasn’t found there but you can be sure that today I’m in love with maths and there are days I miss maths so much that I look for a maths textbook to solve. The truth is in my mum’s heart she wanted to encourage, sshe meant to spur me forward me but she didn’t. That’s something I see many parents doing. If everybody comes first in class then no need to give position. Appreciate their effort before you criticize them. You think if you tell them you tried they will relent. No! every child want to please the parents just to see approval in their eyes. My mum is a great mum, today she doesn’t act like that, at least I hear her tell my younger siblings they did well. Guess she learnt to correct the error she made with me with my younger one. But that one time was enough to go along with me even to the University. It’s very important to build someone’s courage, their morale

Things we do that kills People’s Morale

IMG_20150527_021206There is popular slang among many youths and teenagers even when we are playing it is; “you are killing my morale” and it’s used when someone or your your friend is doing something contrary to your line of thought. For example there is an argument and you want your friend to respond with a physical contact just to instigate a fight. That’s just an example

Our morale is part of our everyday life and no matter who you are and claim to be, so many things and people affect the way it operates, the way your mental state and your mind functions. Before you go check your dictionary, morale is a state of individual psychological well-being upon a sense of confidence and usefulness and purpose.

So what are the things we do intentionally and unintentionally that is killing a friend’s, a loved one’s or even an enemy’s morale?

1. Complaints : this habit is common in many especially women and they think they are just airing their opinion, to get things off their chest. When people come around you and all you do is Complain about one thing or thing or complain about something lacking in an individual all the time, you push that person away. If it’s not your hair is not combed then it’s your shirt that’s rumpled or your mouth is not brushed and other things. Even the ear Like’s to hear good news too.

2. Accusation: even I am tempted to do this many times. When I remember I told someone to do something and it’s not been done then I remember I have a phone. Why haven’t you done this and that and forget to see before you can even appreciate what the person has done. You say, Why are you always like this meanwhile it has only occurred twice since you have been with this person for 3 years. Last weekend I said something very bitter to my fiance like that, I said everything I ask you to do something you never do but it was a terrible lie because before I finish talking it is done most times but then the feeling of the moment overrode every good he has done. But we are meant to see people’s good before their bad. The reason we find it difficult to forgive a hurt is because we forget all the past good and become glued a one bad and become a judge because you can’t be a criminal. The truth is that you are worse off. Forgetting people’s good is a crime. If a bike almost runs you into a vehicle you are quick to shout at him and call him names but you never remember to appreciate the one that gently takes you to your destination safely because you are used to accusations.

3. Finding fault: wow! Some people are professional fault finders. Where you don’t even think they can find fault they do, especially the choleric. These people make me want to shout them down. They are the impossible to please. They have one million and one ways why it should have been done differently. These kind of people make a lot of mistakes but never take the blame, always ready to push the blame on others, always ready to see people’s fault but not theirs. Always ready to pass a judgment but not praise. These people are what I will call the definition of the word “nag”. Sometimes they don’t even realize they are like that because they are always right anyway. Before you see a fault, see the work and acknowledge. Have you ever heard statement such as, “do you expect me to hug the clouds because of this little thing you have done when your mates out there are doing better?”. They just know how to shatter one’s spirit. Look into yourself and stop it if you are like that. Everybody wants to please you but you are just impossible so soon everybody will leave you to yourself.

4. Ignoring people’s feeling: to be continued… IMG_20150527_021143

Felt like sharing

Couldn’t stop myself from forwarding this Excellent message …

A bus full of passengers was traveling while. suddenly the weather changed and there was a huge downpour and lightening all around.

They could see that the lightening would appear to come towards the bus and then go elsewhere.

After 2 or 3 horrible instances of being saved from lightening, the driver stopped the bus about fifty feet away from a tree and said –

“We have somebody in the bus whose death is a certainty today.”

Because of that person everybody else will also get killed today.

Now listen carefully what I am saying ..

I want each person to come out of bus one by one and touch the tree trunk and come back.

Whom so ever death is certain will get caught up by the lightening and will die & everybody else will be saved”.

They had to force the 1st person to go and touch the tree and come back.

He reluctantly got down from the bus and went and touched the tree.

His heart leaped with joy when nothing happened and he was still alive.

This continued for rest of the passengers who were all relieved when they touched the tree and nothing happened.

When the last passenger’s turn came, everybody looked at him with accusing eyes.

That passenger was very afraid and reluctant since he was the only one left.

Everybody forced him to get down and go and touch the tree.

With a 100% fear of death in mind, the last passenger walked to the tree and touched it.

There was a huge sound of thunder and the lightening came down and hit the bus – yes the lightening hit the bus, and killed each and every passenger inside the bus.

It was because of the presence of this last passenger that, earlier, the entire bus was safe and the lightening could not strike the bus.

LIFE LEARNING from this..

At times, we try to take credit for our present achievements, but this could also be because of a person right next to us.

Look around you – Probably someone is there around you, in the form of Your Parents, Your Spouse, Your Children, Your Siblings, Your friends, Your Colleagues, etc, who are saving you from harm..!

Think About it..

You will surely find that Person..!!

Writing a good application letter

The guidelines here apply to both hard copy
correspondence and e-mail.

Main differences between e-mail and hard copy correspondence:
Format: your signature block (address, etc.) goes below your name in e-mail, while it goes at the top of the page on hard copy.

E-mail requires a subject line logical to the recipient. E-mail subject lines can make or break whether your e-mail is opened and read. Hard copy can have a subject line too, but it’s on the letter (after recipient’s address block and before
“Dear…,” and it’s seen after the letter is opened.

Signature : Of course you won’t have a handwritten
signature on e-mail, but don’t forget this on hard copy.

All cover letters should:
Explain why you are sending a resume .
Don’t send a resume without a cover letter.
Don’t make the reader guess what you are asking for; be
specific: Do you want a summer internship opportunity/holiday job, or a
permanent position; are you inquiring about future employment possibilities?
Tell specifically how you learned about the position or the organization — a flyer posted in your department, a Website, a family friend who works at the organization. It is appropriate to mention the name of someone who
suggested that you write.
Convince the reader to look at your resume.
The cover letter will be seen first. Therefore, it must be very well written and targeted to that employer.
Call attention to elements of your background — education, leadership, experience — that are relevant to a position you are seeking. Be as specific as possible, using examples.
Reflect your attitude, personality, motivation, enthusiasm, and communication skills.
Provide or refer to any information specifically requested in a job advertisement that might not be covered in your resume, such as availability date, or reference to an attached writing sample.
Indicate what you will do to follow-up .
In a letter of application — applying for an advertised opening — applicants often say something like “I look forward to hearing from you.” However, if you have further contact info (e.g. phone number) and if the employer hasn’t said “no phone calls,” it’s better to take the initiative to follow-up, saying something like, “I will contact you in the next two weeks to see if you require any additional information regarding my qualifications.”

In a letter of inquiry — asking about the possibility of an opening — don’t assume the employer will contact you. You should say something like, “I will contact you in two weeks to learn more about upcoming employment opportunities with (name of organization).” Then mark your calendar to
make the call.

Page margins, font style and size
For hard copy, left and right page margins of one to 1.5inches generally look good. You can adjust your margins to balance how your document looks on the page.
Use a font style that is simple, clear and commonplace, such as Times New Roman , Arial or Calibri. Font Sizes from 10-12 points are generally in the ballpark of looking appropriate. Keep in mind that different font styles in the
same point size are not the same size! A 12-point Arial is larger than a 12-point Times New Roman.
If you are having trouble fitting a document on one page, sometimes a slight margin and/or font adjustment can be
the solution.
Short story: use what you like, within reason; note what employers use;
generally sans serif fonts are used for on-monitor reading and serif fonts are used for lengthy print items (like books); serif fonts may be considered more formal.
Test: ask
someone to look at a document for five seconds; take away
the document; ask the person what font was on the
document; see if s/he even noticed the style. A too-small or
too-large font gets noticed, as does a weird style.
Should your resume and cover letter font style and size
match? It can be a nice touch to look polished. But it’s also
possible to have polished documents that are not in
matching fonts. A significant difference in style and size
might be noticed. Remember that you can have your
documents reviewed through advising , and that might be a
fine-tuning question you ask.

Sample cover letter format guidelines:
(Hard copy: sender address and contact info at top. Your
address and the date can be left-justified, or centered .)
Your Street Address
City, State Zip Code
Telephone Number
E-mail Address
Month, Day, Year
Mr./Ms./Dr. FirstName LastName
Title
Name of Organization
Street or P. O. Box Address
City, State Zip Code
Dear Mr./Ms./Dr. LastName:
Opening paragraph: State why you are writing; how you
learned of the organization or position, and basic
information about yourself.
2nd paragraph: Tell why you are interested in the employer
or type of work the employer does (Simply stating that you
are interested does not tell why, and can sound like a form
letter). Demonstrate that you know enough about the
employer or position to relate your background to the
employer or position. Mention specific qualifications which
make you a good fit for the employer’s needs. (Focus on
what you can do for the employer, not what the employer
can do for you.) This is an opportunity to explain in more
detail relevant items in your resume. Refer to the fact that
your resume is enclosed. Mention other enclosures if such
are required to apply for a position.
3rd paragraph: Indicate that you would like the opportunity
to interview for a position or to talk with the employer to
learn more about their opportunities or hiring plans. State
what you will do to follow up, such as telephone the
employer within two weeks. If you will be in the employer’s
location and could offer to schedule a visit, indicate when.
State that you would be glad to provide the employer with
any additional information needed. Thank the employer for
her/his consideration.
Sincerely,
(Your handwritten signature [on hard copy])
Your name typed
(In case of e-mail, your full contact info appears below your
printed name [instead of at the top, as for hard copy], and of
course there is no handwritten signature)
Enclosure(s) (refers to resume, etc.)
(Note: the contents of your letter might best be arranged into
four paragraphs. Consider what you need to say and use good
writing style . See the following examples for variations in
organization and layout.)

2. Letter of inquiry: expressing interest in an organization, but
you are not certain if there are current openings.
Information-seeking letters and follow-up
To draft an effective cover letter, you need to indicate that
you know something about the employing organization.
Sometimes, even with research efforts, you don’t have
enough information to do this. In such a case it is
appropriate to write requesting information.

After you receive the desired information you can then draft a follow-up letter that: Thank the sender for the information; Markets why you would be a good job candidate for that organization based on the information; and Explains why you are sending your resume.
….which means it does what all cover letters should do , as
explained at the start above!

Dear Dr. Rhodes:
I enjoyed our conversation on February 18th at the Family
and Child Development seminar on teaching elementary
children and appreciated your personal input about
balancing the needs of children and the community during
difficult economic times. This letter is to follow-up about
the Fourth Grade Teacher position as discussed at the
seminar.  I will complete my M.Ed. in Curriculum and
Instruction at Virginia Tech in May 2011, and will be
available for employment as soon as needed for the
2011-12 school year.
My teacher preparation program at Virginia Tech has
included a full academic year of student teaching. Last
semester I taught second grade and this semester am
teaching fourth grade. These valuable experiences have
afforded me the opportunity to:
Develop lesson plans on a wide range of topics and varying
levels of academic ability,
Work with emotionally and physically challenged students in
a total inclusion program,
Observe and participate in effective classroom management
approaches,
Assist with parent-teacher conferences, and
Complete in-service sessions on diversity, math and reading
skills, and community relations.
My experience includes work in a private day care facility,
Rainbow Riders Childcare Center, and in Virginia Tech’s
Child Development Laboratory.  Both these facilities are
NAEYC-accredited and adhere to the highest standards. At
both locations, I led small and large group activities, helped
with lunches and snacks, and implemented appropriate
activities. Both experiences also provided me with
extensive exposure to the implementation of
developmentally appropriate activities and materials.
I enthusiastically look forward to putting my knowledge and
experience into practice in the public school system. Next
week I will be in Vienna, and I plan to call you then to
answer any questions that you may have.  I can be reached

Why is it this way?

A few days ago I discovered a shocking revelation confirmed to me by doctors. Guess what it is, Patients lie to their doctor. I found it hard to believe but alas it is true. The question is why? Knowing the doctor is not God to know what happened and is happening.

I used to think it was only the media but now I discover that accountants, lawyers, business men, artists all lie. I didn’t know the severity until I heard that patients also lie. It was a disturbing discovering because I kept wondering where the world is heading to while we are on earth. There is this common saying that women love lies but I believe it’s all that love lies. Media stories sell only if it bad news because that’s only when it’s news anyway. So they modify a story until it has a bad, horrible side even if the story was already bad. Movie producers will always twist a movie to be full of evil such that 96% of the movie is sad events and the remaining to introduction and happy ending. The reason is that it’s audience, you and I want to believe a lie, and that they must exaggerate to elongate a movie. The politicians tell so much lies that even you know they are all lies but you vote them anyway and start complaining about them. You won’t vote the one that makes less promises because you say he doesn’t have what you need but I think that it’s because he didn’t say what you wanted to hear.

image

Lies lies lies every where, every ear wants to hear them, so how are we going to get better. We hate those who speak truth so how are we going to change. There is another popular saying, “truth is better”, I want to disagree. Truth is only bitter to those who hate truth and love lies or you told a lie in form of a truth, you let out your truth in order to blackmail or hurt and crush a spirit. Truth in itself holds the power to bring change and deliver, and set straight many wrongs correcting the error of many generations.

image

But there has to be a change and it must start from you. Stop lying to the doctor, to yourppatients, to your neighbor, to your clients, to your listeners, to your benefactors, to your parents, to your children, to your spouses, to your employees, to your employers, to your nation, to your world. The change begins with you…. Pass it on

Seizing Opportunities

During my undergraduate days, there was a programme that was organized by the school authorities as was the custom every year. The speaker that day raised a book and asked for who wanted it, many of us raised our hands. He kept asking who wants the book, while many of us including me kept raising our hands one boy went forward and collected the book. Needless to say that he was the one who finally got the book. The speaker said it was that guy that wanted the book, the rest of us wished we had the book.

In a crowd where there is so much campaigns as well as lousy behavior so many of us stand aloof and believe that luck will shine on us and we will be picked to get one of the gift. I notice that the people we call lousy on such occasion are the ones who get all the prizes because they take extra steps.

There are so many people in the world, so many nations, but there are a few actually very few as compared to the population who have created a niche for themselves and their names have settled in every home. The reason why every nations of the world watch Bollywood movies is because over the years they have done exceptional things so that even if they don’t any longer it will take a while to see that. The reason everybody is shouting Jega now and created a place for him in the dictionary is because he behaved in an uncommon, unexpected manner such that the world stood still for him. The reason every athlete want to be Bolt is because he came one day and broke the record and kept breaking his own record. Who knew him the moment he first stood on the track but after seconds the world stood still for him.

Opportunities are not wrapped in a gold parcel embroidered with diamonds. They sometimes appear as normal events or things we take for granted until it turns out otherwise. Being sensitive and wise is one way to take hold of opportunities. Opportunities will also find you if you are exceptional and dedicated in what you do. Diligence always finds men out. Indifference and lack of vision wastes men. The people are tired of seeing the same thing, to be celebrated you must do some different not necessarily extraordinary. There is this popular saying that “opportunity comes but once”  but I will say that opportunities stare at you everyday. Opportunities are not extraordinary events but a chance for you to be exceptional. Use every opportunity to show kindness, show your worth, show your talent, show your show and people will market you. Seest this a man diligent in his work, he shall stand before kings and not before mean men from Proverbs.

Therefore be very careful how you live- not as unwise but as wise, taking advantage of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Ephesians 5:15-16

Why Life Seems Unfair

One of the most popular movie in the world is Titanic which ends in a tragedy. Many will say life is unfair, just when Jack and Rose found love the sea snatches it away. Also heard the story of Concord? The fastest plane in the world that crashed. Someone’s great invention and hard Labour slipped through his hands just like that. Let me bring you closer home, have you read so hard, decided not to cheat in the exams or test and at the end of the day you failed or didn’t do well while others who you think didn’t study like you did or cheated did well in the exams? Many say “life is unfair”  and some go far to saying “God is unfair”.

What we forget is that many things we do decide the outcome of an event. The Titanic and the Concord had something in common, they crashed on their first outing and bit the crash started when they made the wrong statement saying not even God can crash the Titanica and the Concord when in life you can’t be 100% certain of an event but you can be 99.9999% and leave the other 0.0001% to uncertainty which will allow you take precautions. Our daily activities contribute to other factors that make things happen  such as how positive or negative we are. Our life style is a major determinant. Examples :
Staying negative
Fear
Keeping the wrong company
Talking carelessly
Being ungrateful to God and men
Not seeking the right counsel
Not eating the right food, unhealthy nutrition
Not asking questions, always assuming
Not having a defined goal
Being unhonest, and undependable
Being impolite, saucy and insolent
Not given to reading and many more.

When we combine our doings with that of others they bring the results we have. Not to mention that the world is unbalanced now all due to the activities of man, not God nor the nature. Actually if not for God and the activity of His handwork, the earth should have been destroyed long ago but God is faithful even when we are unfaithful.

Before we say life is unfair, we should think about untold stories that we never know, about the results of our actions that we have long forgotten and the ones we remember and know that nothing happens by chance and also, not all that happens to a man is destiny, it could be wrong decision and wrong timing.

Think through, pray through… And remember God orders the step of the righteous ”
