In The Power of Habit, Charles Duhigg highlights the impact of your habits on who you are and what you are capable of achieving. Habits are part of the foundation of our lives, our companies and are responsible for a large part of the results we get. How do Habits Work

Eugene Pauly was an elderly patient who had brain problems caused by a viral cephalitis and therefore lost the ability to use a part of his brain, the medial temporal lobe. The rest of his brain kept functioning normally, but his memory was impaired. He became unable to remember anything that had happened after 1960, but he remembered everything that happened before that. He became a man unable to learn new things and, in seconds, forgot what had happened the previous time. Eugene could not remember where his bedroom or kitchen was in his own house.

Daily, to exercise, his wife would take him for walks around the block. But one day, Eugene disappeared, and his wife became worried. His loss of memory could make him lose himself and never return home. Incredibly, in just 15 minutes, following his daily route, he was able to return home. A few days later, Eugene was able to make the journey alone. This has led scientists to study and discover that habits, their routine practices, are stored in an area of the brain that is completely different from the temporal lobe responsible for memory. This proved that we learn and make unconscious decisions without the need to remember the facts that lead to that decision or learning. This is the power of habit.

Activating Habits

Our brain is a powerful machine. It is constantly finding ways to work less and automate routines, just to save energy. A habit works in a 3-step flow:

  • Trigger: Something happens, and your brain understands this trigger as a call to enter the automatic mode and choose which routine to use;
  • Routine: It is a physical, emotional or mental action that is automatically triggered by the trigger;
  • Reward: A positive stimulus occurs and says To your brain that routine works and so it should be stored. Understanding how habits are triggered is important because it gives us control over ourselves. By understanding triggers and rewards, we are able to change, adapt, and create new routines.

How to Form New Habits

The main reason people study this topic is to learn how to create new habits and reinforce positive ones. A relatively new habit adopted by the population, for example, is the simple routine of brushing teeth. Claude Hopkins, an American publicist, encouraged this habit by tying it to a common trigger in people’s daily lives. In his ads, he said, “Spend your tongue on your teeth. Do you feel a layer on them? This layer causes your teeth to lose their color and deteriorate.” After the trigger, his ads said, “Pepsodent toothpaste removes this layer and makes your teeth cleaner and more beautiful.” The great truth is that this layer is natural and the Pepsodent toothpaste does not remove it. The trigger, however, was so powerful that people just licked their teeth and connected them with the idea of brushing their teeth (routine) and reward (beautiful teeth). Less than 10 years after this campaign, the American population who brushed their teeth grew almost 10 fold.

Claude Hopkins’ technique is simple and follows the 3 steps:

  1. Create a new trigger in your mind (or people’s minds);
  2. Associate a positive routine with it;
  3. Create a mental or physical reward associated with maintaining this habit.

Change of Habit

American coach Tony Dungy had an unconventional and extremely successful method to ensure that his athletes had good results: he led his players not to automatically respond to their opponents’ moves. He did not want his team to think before they acted.

Tony used to form habits that responded immediately, not rational choices at every turn. The coach knew that habits are not easily removed, they need to be transformed. And they only change if a new routine can replace the existing routine with the same trigger and the same reward. His drills were based on tying existing triggers and rewards to new routines. The new routines were simpler, gave players less choice and more non-rational behavior. With his method, Tony has won dozens of titles and has become a legendary trainer.

Another extremely successful method of changing habits is the 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. The method simply proposes new routines to trigger the physical need to consume alcohol and uses the same rewards that alcohol awakens in people, such as relaxation, need for company, reduction of anxiety, etc. However, the AA method, by itself, still has difficulties transforming people’s habits. That’s why it also dedicates time in creating the belief that people addicted to alcohol need the intervention of other people. Users need to believe that more people are involved in their transformation so as not to disappoint them. This faith is an essential ingredient for changing habits since change occurs in society.

Small Wins Have Big Impacts

There are many habits in our lives that dramatically influence how we live and how businesses work.

One positive habit leads to another and this creates a chain of positive habits that work in unison. People who start exercising, for example, naturally begin to eat better, become more productive at work and, consequently, reduce their stress levels. In your life or your business, it is essential to identify a fundamental habit that needs to be changed, and that will bring several improvements in various other habits that impact your day-to-day.

Finding the fundamental habit is difficult and requires a trial and error approach. The important thing is to identify something that is small enough to be changed and has positive impacts on the whole. In 2009, for example, one study proved that the simple habit of keeping track of food eaten during the day was able to help people identify eating patterns, which made them better plan their food and make them healthier. In this study, the group that had the feeding diaries lost twice the weight of the other participants.

Scientists have proven that willpower is fundamental to success, with far more impact than the person’s intelligence. This was proven in an experiment called the marshmallow test. A candy was placed in front of the children and those who resisted the temptation to eat it for 15 minutes would gain another. The result is impressive: children who managed to wait to earn the second marshmallow scored the highest scores in high school final grades, higher university access rates, and improved academic performance. However, the human being has a limited stock of willpower, and it also needs to be exercised. When we develop our ability to “postpone reward” through willpower training, we expand our stockpile and become capable of reaching higher.

How Leaders Form Habits

All companies have institutional habits, which are repeated daily by their members. Although a company believes that it makes planned decisions on a daily basis, the truth is that there is a machine of routines that lead to the decisions of the organization. Successful companies cultivate habits that balance power and peace.

In the early 2000s, for example, Rhode Island Hospital was considered one of the best in the United States. But with success, a toxic culture had set in. Doctors treated nurses badly, and this led to ill-treatment of patients and medical errors. The executive responsible for the quality of the Hospital took simple actions that completely changed their culture. Simple things like the use of cameras in the offices, conference checklists for various situations and the creation of a system of evaluations allowed the nurses to prevent operational errors and any ill-treatment. These simple measures formed new habits that made the hospital regain its authority and win several quality awards.

How Corporations Manipulate Habits

In recent years, with the advent of the internet and computing, companies have been able to capture a high volume of data on consumer habits to predict their actions, create new products and analyze market demands. This information has led them to discover that habits are more important than the intentions of the consumers in the buying process.

Each person has unique, personal habits. Therefore, analyzing this high volume of data, companies that understand the role of habit in the buying process are able to customize their products and services to the habits of the most common groups of people. With information such as your past purchases, your age, your gender, and the means of payment you use, companies can identify groups of users who act in a relatively similar fashion. If you buy lollipops and diapers every time you go to the supermarket, for example, companies may find that you have children of different ages. With this information, the same companies can send you personalized product recommendations and coupons.

Another common approach to marketing using data is to take advantage of major events in people’s lives, such as first job, marriage or childbirth, creating opportunities for people to form new habits. You need to understand that companies follow their habits and use them as baits and triggers to manipulate their consumption patterns and must be ready to resist offers that take advantage of it.

Habits and Society: Creating Movements

In times of racial segregation in the US, one story stands out: Rosa Parks, a black woman, challenged the system and settled on the “white” part of the bus which was divided between whites and blacks. This simple but powerful gesture began a great wave that culminated in the end of segregation. She was arrested and, almost immediately, groups began distributing pamphlets and boycotting the transport system. The boycott became a new habit of the community, generated protests and eventually the need for the Civil Rights Act of 1964 in the United States.

Rosa was not the first person to do this, but this was not just an act defying the system. She had ties and friends in her community. Behaviors that occur without rational planning, as with Rosa, are often the mainstays of major changes in society. Movements like this happen because there are habits related to the group of friends, neighbors, and groups with regards to a cause. Rosa’s action grew because it was adopted by the community and members wanted to demonstrate a new identity and participate in a group that was united through the desire for civil rights.

The power of weak ties explains how a protest can grow from a group of friends and become a strong social movement. Convincing thousands of people to pursue the same goal is difficult, but using the link between people to create peer pressure tends to work to change the habits of a society.

Are We Responsible for Our Habits?

In 2010, a neuroscience researcher discovered something fascinating in doing MRI scans comparing the brains of gambling addicts with casual gamblers. When they saw the casino machines spinning, the addicts’ brains always reacted with a sense of victory, even when they lost, while casual players correctly recorded their losses in memory. This is a key point in forming habits. When the addict is rewarded in a defeat situation, this creates a vicious circle that leads to more moves and greater losses. Casual players only record the reward when they stop playing, and this avoids losing money. Charles wonders about the morality of this. Is it right to form habits that destroy people’s lives? Is the addicted player responsible for his/her bad decisions? Despite moral questioning and being unable to judge who is to blame, according to Charles, once you understand that the habit exists, you have the ability to change it.

Change of Habit, a Practical Guide

Once we can understand the role of habits in our lives, our main challenge is to transform them according to what we want. Follow these steps to form healthy habits:

1. Identify the routine: Although it is not always obvious and often unconscious, the important thing is that you are able to analyze your behaviors and plan how to change them. Identify what you want to change before you move on to the second step.

2. Try different rewards: If you can not change bad routines for new ones, then you must play with the rewards. If you are eating bad food and eating unhealthily before bedtime, for example, then you should replace the reward of this routine. Replace the food with a healthy snack or just rest for a few minutes. After that, turn on a timer, wait 15 minutes and ask yourself if you still feel the same craving for fast food. If so, you have not yet identified the trigger of the habit. Try different rewards until you find out which trigger triggers that bad habit. If by chance, in this example the trigger was your hunger, understand that you can overcome hunger by eating different things, such as healthy snacks. If the trigger of this habit is fatigue, take a few minutes to rest.

3. Isolate the trigger: If you know which reward satisfies that trigger, you still need to understand the trigger more thoroughly. The most common triggers tend to be related to 5 main categories:

  • One place: Where do you find yourself when the routine comes up?
  • A time: When does this routine arise?
  • An emotional state: How do you feel when this routine arises?
  • Other people: Who are you with when she shows up?
  • A next clear action: When you have something to do, and the routine is triggered. If you have a habit that you need to eliminate, write down the places, times, feelings, who you are with, and what the next steps are before that routine appears. After a few repetitions, you will begin to understand the pattern.

4. Create a plan: Once you have understood the 3 main components of the habit, it is easy to plan a new routine that brings you the same reward for the same habit. Be alert until the trigger appears and act according to plan. If it works and you have the willpower to repeat this new conditioning, then you will be able to transform your habits.

Habits dictate much of your activities and say a lot about who you are. Understanding them is the first step in being able to transform your life, your productivity, and your business results. Have you seen anybody who works really extra hard, puts all the effort he/she knows how and is still struggling to gain ground? When you look at such scenarios, what comes to your mind? You wonder why he is working so hard and gets a little result. Some go as far as praying against the enemies holding down their destiny. When you struggle or see others fight, the above bible verse comes to mind. Then you begin to ask yourself what is happening after all the effort you put into your work. You study hard and end up at average or fail. You have been working for the last 12 years yet no significant promotion. Your stagnant state questions the above passage if you are a hard worker.
We have discussed the problem so what the solutions are?
Let me tell you something you might not be thinking about. I like the way “The Message” translation puts it; “Skilled workers”. If for all your gift and talent and work you haven’t become skilled then you definitely is the one limiting yourself.

    3. You don’t act as you know it, be teachable.
    4. Always upgrade yourself. Don’t remain where you were five years ago
    5. Research journals, interviews, biographies and READ!!!

I have this tailor friend who is very good at what he does, and he is well paid. We got talking about where he learnt. He then said what he learnt from his teacher is not what he is doing today. If he had continued with what he was taught a long time ago, he would have been out of business. So he improved on himself, learnt new tricks and reads on latest trends. He is well sought after and turn down works if your deadline is outside his scope of time. Because he is in high demand.
The difference between hard work and success is skill dressed with wisdom. Improving your ability constantly is the proof of diligence.

Today is your birthday, yesterday was your birthday, and tomorrow is my birthday. How do you feel every time you clock a new year? What feelings erupt in your heart on the day of your birth each year?

Toddlers marvel me the most. If one of their class mates celebrates his birthday, they come home and ask their mother, “Mommy, is tomorrow my birthday?” every day they ask if it’s their birthday until you tell them next week Monday is your birthday. The next thing, they drop their list. Mommy I want new shoes, dress and biscuit. I want cake and drinks to take to school or church. They seem to have no chill until that birthday comes and goes. Interestingly or sadly, they grow out of it as they grow up and either stop attaching much or any importance at all to their birthday or they lose the essence of marking one’s birthday.

If you have honestly answered the above questions then you would have definitely learnt something. Lessons that will guide you into the new year and always. 

As good as the cakes, drinks and foods are, wisdom learnt is best. Numbering your days is not to eat the time away but to apply you’re your time to wisdom. Advancing time should equate advancing knowledge which is the new gold. And knowledge combined with understanding should heal you of lack and poverty.

As you grow older, you should know who to cut off and habits to drop because you would have studied and learnt the impact they have on you and your vision. If you realize that in the previous year you didn’t make friends of great influence or meet people that you can stand on their shoulders to climb up, wisdom will teach you to do that this year. You need a community of visionaries to help you build your vision. If you stay in a community of poor and contently poor people then you can only go that far. Iron sharpens iron.

Thirty years after women have become 50% of the academic population in the United States, men still occupy the vast majority of leadership positions, both in public and private sectors. That means the feminist voices are still not being heard in an egalitarian manner regarding decisions that affect our lives. In Lean In, Sheryl Sandberg, the most powerful woman on Facebook and one of the 50 most powerful woman in the world according to Forbes magazine, explores the main motives by which this distortion still occurs and offers practical tips for women who want to use their potential to conquer the world.

Much Yet To Conquer

We live in a very interesting moment in which women have the highest level of expression in history, mostly thanks to the feminist movements of the 60s and 70s. On the other hand, because it seems like the fight for equality has been won, progress has been taking place, and things have been evolving, however at a low pace. Inequality of genders still exists in various spheres of society, mainly when it comes to career and work. In 2010, in the United States, a female worker would make 77 cents for each dollar received by a colleague of the male sex. This inequality is a global problem, and it occurs in the whole world, not only in the United States. In Europe, for example, the difference is a little less, 84 cents for each dollar, but it still shows a high level of inequality.

The financial point is more obvious and proves that there is still much to be conquered, but we need to go beyond it. In the workplace, for example, Sheryl mentions that various studies show the performance of women is also unjustly evaluated. Do you know what is most curious? It is that discrimination happens both by men and women. Sheryl mentions, as an example, a study whose objective was to ask participants to evaluate the performance and the growth potential of workers who had identical performances. In this study, both men and women evaluated women in a worse manner than their colleagues of the opposite sex. You should be asking yourself, “this should only happen with ignorant people, with the poorly educated and the misogynists, right? Most people think that, if people evaluators were well informed and educated, the result would be fair, but that is not true. In the study, furthermore, the more the person claimed to be impartial and not discriminate the opposite sex, the bigger the discrepancy of the evaluation between the sexes, always benefiting the individual of the male sex.

Many times, we think that a masculine world discriminates women, but in reality, women also sabotage themselves. Both sexes have a perception of less value of the female sex, and we need to be attentive to these matters since this valid sexism exists and affects our lives. This hidden inequality also exists in the family environment and in relationships, where many times you expect the woman stalls her career to take care of the children. A study has asked the question, “Do you expect your husband/wife to abandon their career to raise your children?”. The results were emblematic. 46% of men expected their wife to abandon their career to take care of the children, while only 5% of the women expected that from their husbands. Women still face direct sexual harassment and discrimination. Sheryl affirms, “We should be thankful to the women who fought to change this before us, for the rights that we now have, but there is still much to be done.

We Need You To Lead!

Inequality of gender is still more evident in the leadership positions. In the United States, only 4% of the CEOs of the 500 largest companies are women. These numbers exceed even more because, in the academic world, women, on average, perform better than men, totaling 60% of master’s degrees in the United States. How does this multitude of professional and capable women not make it to leadership positions? That is the question Sheryl explains: several factors lead to this, but we are responsible for the main one: lack of ambition for leadership. Men are more ambitious to become leaders than women, says Sheryl. The reason for this is that gender stereotypes also act in veiled sexism. Society does not expect women to prioritize their career or be ambitious, and it labels those who do it like bossy, among other things. These stereotypes are reinforced throughout life for the whole society, from childhood, ultimately limiting the perspectives of each gender. While most men assume they can have successful working lives and achieve leadership positions, there is pressure on women to choose between caring for family or career. This society mental model makes many women feel responsible for staying at home and caring for the family and putting their careers aside. Often, they start their careers, get a job, but later drop out to take care of their children and stay home. That explains how the lack of ambition for leadership causes men to remain in power.

Equality Has To Be The Agenda

With all the facts pointed out by Sheryl and our day to day reality, it is clear that there is gender inequality. And so, it is necessary that the subject is increasingly addressed so that this inequality is reduced. It is not a matter of demanding special treatment for women, but rather of engaging people in the cause and seeking solutions. When the conversation occurs, more women are inspired to lead change and more men who understand the problem want to become part of the solution to this inequality. Getting people to know and understand the problem helps us channel changes, albeit small ones, day in and day out. Even if you can not change the world, you can change your home, your business, and even your street. For example, knowing that there are fewer women in leadership positions can encourage a manager to select more candidates for the next promotion of the company.

Another important and surprising point is that women often do not support each other, and to achieve a less inequitable scenario, we must change that. An example: if a woman manages to reach a leadership position in a mostly male company, she begins to feel threatened by other women and thus hinder their promotions. That is a type of behavior that reinforces the current status of inequality. Another example: mothers who stay at home and do not have jobs constantly emotionally discourage working mothers, leaving them insecure about their careers. The first Navy woman to be assigned to a submarine was respected by the male sailors, but the sailors’ wives did not respect her and envied her. Women cannot be divided if they want to achieve equality and the equality agenda needs to be discussed more often. According to a Harvard study, egalitarian environments increase the satisfaction of all involved, not just women.

Trust Yourself, Girl

Lack of confidence is an obstacle that greatly disturbs women. Even the most competent women can feel the so-called impostor syndrome and feel that their skills are not enough for success. Sheryl herself shares in her book that she has gone through this insecurity. Men, on the other hand, are much less affected by this lack of self-confidence. Several studies prove that while women tend to underestimate their abilities, men tend to overestimate their abilities and look better than they really are. Another important point is that men like to attribute their success to their abilities and their failures to external factors, while the women adopt the opposite stance. They attribute their successes to external factors and blame themselves for their failures. These perceptual distortions make women insecure causing them to sabotage themselves in job interviews and in the day-to-day.

You must have the self-confidence to present yourself and communicate according to your real value. A woman should never give up career opportunities because she feels disqualified. You must take the initiative and seize interesting opportunities, even if you consider yourself an impostor. The easiest way to develop self-confidence is to train. Act as if you were more confident. Behave as if you are more confident. That makes you develop your confidence and assimilates these behaviors. If you lead many women and you know they have a lower level of confidence, it can also inspire you to encourage them and support their careers. The traditional way of thinking about careers in which the person enters as a trainee in a large company and dozens of years later become a director or vice president no longer works. Career ceased to be a climb and have become a journey of experimentation. It is not necessary to have an exact goal but to try different routes to find out which one will lead you in the right direction. Having this freedom helps you create opportunities, but you also need short- and long-term dreams.

Sheryl, for example, says her long-term dream was to have a job that meant a lot to people and used that idea as a master line to make her choices. For short-term goals, you need to include goals and learning for constant evolution. Another important point to plan your career is to see if the environment you are in gives you the potential for growth. She was afraid when Larry Page offered her a job at the then unknown Google. He told her the following: “If they offer you a seat on a rocket, you do not ask what the fate is, you just take off.”

Success Or Charisma?

Stereotypes do exist and still affect the way our brain processes information. Even today, society expects men to be decisive and direct and women sensitive. A successful woman breaks with her gender stereotype, and this causes her to face unnecessary resistance from society. Competent and ambitious men are praised while these women are described pejoratively. To further complicate things, trying to fit into an expected gender role can also limit a woman’s career. To overcome gender biases, women also need to adopt a negotiating stance, always emphasizing their skills, citing wage indicators and using endorsements from their superiors in organizations.

When Sheryl was talking to Mark Zuckerberg about accepting a Facebook proposal, she was inclined to accept the first offer she received. Her husband suggested she make a counter-proposal and she did. In the end, she closed a much more lucrative proposal. It is also proven by studies that to develop their careers, women must appear to be “appropriately feminine,” that is, pleasant, charismatic, and sensitive. That means crossing a high-pitched minefield. It is a paradox that needs to fit into the traditional model of society to bring about change. After all, with more and more women leading, this kind of behavior will be more necessary in the future. Sheryl says she always remembers the first feedback received on a Facebook rating by Mark Zuckerberg. “If you please, everyone, you’re not making enough progress.”

Express Yourself With Clarity And Transparency

Honest and transparent communication is essential to developing a promising career. It strengthens relationships, allows for challenging unsubstantiated decisions, and helps tackle complicated issues. Many women are afraid to talk about what they think about work, thinking that it causes them to be denied or criticized. It is the leader’s role to encourage authenticity by asking for feedback and suggestions, as well as publicly thanking those who have given their opinions and cared about an issue. Efficient communication in any environment means finding the balance between authenticity and consideration for other’s feelings. Sheryl suggests that you be politely honest, not brutally honest. There is no absolute truth, so to communicate effectively, you must first try to see things as the other. A good phrase to put yourself in the other’s position would be: “I understood that you are concerned about this because you feel …” Another tip of communication is to use the “I” to show your opinions and disagreements: “I think that we should do this another way … “, and never” You’re wrong.”

Do Not Ask To Be Mentored

Having a mentor is a good tool for developing your career. Do you know that director who advises you and endorses your work? Your mentor’s time and experience are valuable, so do not use your moments to complain or just collect information without giving something back.

Our society teaches women, from a young age, that one day they will have to choose between having a successful career or being a good mother. This pattern has a devastating side effect: women often hurt their own careers preemptively to make room for this balance. Imagine you have a great job offer. As you plan to start a family in a few years, you will not accept the opportunity or wait, after all, children will demand time. Choices such as this one make it possible for the mother to be in a much worse professional position until the birth of her first child than if she had accepted the opportunities that appeared to her. This kind of choice leads to stagnation. Therefore, never make decisions about this type of opportunity using the mental model used by society. Forget the stereotype. If you have to make choices regarding things like your career and looking after children, your professional results will be hampered. And after maternity leave, your career may be so impaired that you choose to leave it. Balancing your work and family is important, but letting opportunities slip for that reason can sacrifice your career. Before having your children and your maternity leave is the best time to speed up and work harder. Do not break early, accelerate more.

Focus On What Matters

You will not be able to do everything. Women may have a greater concern and feel that they are leaving things “on hold”, but it is important to have balance and focus. Even if you are an executive at a large company, you need to set boundaries and work within them. There is pressure on mothers to spend more time with their children, and this can create a sense of guilt in mothers who have a job. Knowing how to manage this guilt is just as important as managing your time, so you need to know how to focus on the things you are actually doing and not what you have failed to do. Prioritize and focus on what is most important. Find time to go to your children’s school, but do not worry about making the beds to perfection. It is natural for people to say they learned a lot during a project, or while starting something new, but for Eric, it takes more than just learning. It is necessary to constantly validate the learnings and check if it still remains true. Your true goal is not the learning itself, but the validation of it. Validation comes through simplifying and proving that you are solving a problem that people have. You need to focus on what customers really need and eliminate everything else. In IMVU, his startup, Eric worked developing a 3D virtual world and plugins for chat tools in 2004. During the company’s initial testing phase, in conversations with users and observing their behaviors, he found that consumers did not want – nor did they know – how to install the plugins in their chat software. On the other hand, he also learned that people did not mind having to install new chat software, or even use more than one software. This learning was validated by consumers, and he realized that he had wasted a lot of time and resources creating something that people did not want or knew how to use. After this realization, Eric and his team realized that the important thing was to launch experiments quickly, learn from them and understand what works and what doesn’t.

Validation came from the numbers and analysis of users’ behaviors. If a change occurred and brought good results, it was validated and maintained. Otherwise, it was removed.

The Importance of Early Monetization

In the life of a startup, one of its goals is to find a business model, and this comes through revenue generation. If people pay for something, that is minimally validated.

Eric’s startup started charging its customers early, unlike many startups, and that also helped his team. It is better to have some income as soon as possible, even if it is low, than to spend a lot of time trying to figure out something that people will pay for one day. Many entrepreneurs get caught up in product development for a long time without charging their potential customers and dreaming of the day when people will simply want to pay for their products and services. The great truth is that most of the time postponing invoicing leads to the development of products for which people do not want to pay. Starting to charge early is important and will help you to really understand how much value you are generating for users with your product or service.

To discover a business model, you need to interact with potential customers and capture value. Therefore, you need to start with a prototype, albeit incomplete and constantly validate it with your potential customers. Create revenue targets, although low, but grow steadily from the start.

The Importance of Experimentation

The founders of Zappos had a vision in which he believed that people would want to buy shoes online.

But how do you test if this really works, without having to buy thousands of pairs of shoes, building a website and build a stock? Rather than starting with a large structure, they did an experiment to validate if there was enough demand to achieve the vision of selling shoes online. They started by taking pictures of shoes in various physical stores and advertising them on the internet. If a customer placed an order, they would go to the store, buy the shoe, and send it to the customer. This minimal product allowed them to test many critical factors for business success. With this experiment, they validated that there was demand, they learned the optimal pricing for their products, became aware of complaints and the logistical challenges of the business with a minimum of expenses. This validation allowed them to really start the company and it was such a success that it was eventually acquired by the giant Amazon for more than one billion dollars.

Build, Mesure, Learn

To experiment in the right way and to generate validated learning, you must follow the scientific method. Just as in science, in the business world, every experiment must begin with a hypothesis. A price hypothesis, for example, tests whether the product generates value to users. A marketing hypothesis, on the other hand, tests whether the company can reach out to consumers at a cost to generate profit. To test the value of your product to the customer, find potential customers to run the experiment. To conduct an effective test, you need to follow 3 main steps:

  • Build;
  • Measure;
  • Learn;

In a startup, this cycle must be running all the time. Find people who would be the ideal customers for that imaginable product and build a minimum viable product (MVP), having you as a concierge. Yes, the product will not be mature enough, but for the initial users, if the problem you solve is large enough to generate value for them, they will forgive you for its shortcomings and bugs.

Participate actively in product validation with customers and monitor all experiment results. Track new revenue, adoption of features, the frequency of use, etc. Always analyze whether the measurement corroborates your initial hypothesis.

For example, if a customer asks for a feature that does not yet exist but you plan to do one day, that means you’re on the right track. On the other hand, if there are features in the product plan that are not ordered by customers, remove them from the plan to avoid waste. These close interactions with customers will help you to constantly validate your hypotheses.

The build-measure-learn model is the main pillar of the lean startup, and once an MVP is built, its purpose is to quickly learn and iterate through it, always starting from new assumptions and user feedbacks.

The Leap of Faith

Every startup also needs to have their own beliefs about its product and its ability to truly cater to the cravings of customers. Steve Jobs, for example, when launching the iPod, had 2 primordial beliefs, which were considered true. The first of these is that users wanted to listen to music anywhere, on their headphones. The second is that they were willing to pay for music on the internet, unlike how they formerly consumed music, through digital piracy. The first had already been validated by Sony, with the Walkman, but the second was much more uncertain and risky. You need to be able to choose the risks you are going to take and reduce them to the maximum through validation.

Intuit is a company that was founded on the belief that someday companies would use computers to pay bills and to track their expenses and their financial and accounting status. To test the concept, the founders phoned random people to understand how this vision applied in practice.

Final Notes:

Startups should take a scientific approach to test their main assumptions and then build a sustainable business model from a validated hypothesis. They should develop product prototypes quickly and then continually refine them by collecting consumer feedback and BML(Build, Measure, Learn) cycles.

Every startup must define its core metrics and analyze them appropriately.

In chapter two, he states past president of the United States of America who practiced the principles and how it worked.

So what is Dream?
A dream is a wish or desire for something better or desired future.
What is Vision?
Vision is a set goal with a well-documented course of action set to it. It is the ability to look farther than your eyes can see.
It is not wrong to dream after all if wishes were horses, even the beggar would ride on them. But dreams are for the old men. The opportunity they have to look back and thank God for great decisions taken or regret opportunities lost. Dreams are for the old men to recount what they would have been today if they had Vision as youths.

It is very paramount to have VISION as a youth. It becomes a matter of necessity to carve out a path for your life. A well spelt out vision gives you a direction and how to go about that which you are pursuing. Setting a VISION enables your ability to resist distraction and side attraction. Every man with a PURPOSE has a vision.
What do you do with your Vision?
• Write it down and make it plain. Don’t keep your vision in your head; write it down so that it serves as a constant reminder.
• Write out ways you plan to achieve your vision
• Research and read about it. Read about people who have gone ahead in the field of your endeavour.
• Pray about it constantly
• It is not for everybody to know because there are always people ready to destroy and discourage.
• Connect with like-minded people and people in the field you are pursuing so that you learn from their stories and you can avoid their pitfalls and walk with their lessons learnt.
• Run with your vision and don’t look back.

You should know that you can make visions of your dreams. As a young man with plenty time in his hands, never allow your dreams stay as dreams, turn them into visions and run with them.

I watched my eight months old son who is learning to walk as took steps and pulling me along as his support and he the guide, I was amused. As he led me enthusiastically and I sheepishly followed, he came to a point where he halted.
